NWAA launches Thankathon to celebrate lifesaving supporters

Published: 4th December 2024

This festive season, the North West Air Ambulance Charity (NWAA) is proud to launch its Thankathon campaign, a heartfelt initiative to thank the incredible supporters and fundraisers who enable the charity to provide lifesaving care across the North West.

Marking its 25th year of lifesaving service in 2024, the Thankathon campaign embodies the spirit of generosity, showcasing how community donations and fundraising has made an extraordinary difference in the charity’s mission.

NWAA’s helicopters and critical care vehicles operate 365 days a year, entirely funded by public support, saving countless lives in emergencies.

One of the many lives changed by NWAA’s work is that of 13-year-old Hannah from Lancashire. In 2023, while out riding her bike with her sister Kate, Hannah sustained a devastating injury when she skidded, came off her bike and punctured her femoral vein, missing her artery by a hairline.

NWAA’s expert team of critical care paramedics arrived quickly, stabilising her and airlifting her to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, where emergency surgery was needed.

Thanks to the swift intervention of NWAA, Hannah was airlifted to hospital which took 13 minutes, a journey that would have taken over an hour by road.

Her family, profoundly grateful for the care she received, have since become passionate supporters of NWAA, raising over £3,000 through fundraising events, like the Three Peaks Challenge.

Hannah’s mother, Janet Bellamy, said: “I can’t even think of the words to say to them. It brings tears to my eyes because I can’t thank them enough. What they did for Hannah, Kate, and us as parents was truly amazing.”

The Thankathon campaign not only honours stories like Hannah’s but also shines a light on the extraordinary collective effort of the NWAA community.

Emma Pearson, Head of Community, Fundraising and Events at the North West Air Ambulance Charity, said: “As we reflect on 25 years of service, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the unwavering dedication of our supporters.

“The Thankathon is our way of showing appreciation to everyone who makes our work possible. From all of us, thank you for your support, your commitment and your unwavering dedication to our cause. We couldn’t do it without you.”
