North West Air Ambulance Charity (NWAA) is sharing the inspiring story of James Peebles, a former patient whose life was forever changed after a tragic accident on May 2, 2022.
At just 15 years old, James was climbing a tree when a branch snapped, causing him to fall from 30ft. Thanks to the swift response of the Critical Care Paramedics at NWAA, James received critical care that ultimately saved his life.
Upon receiving the emergency call, the NWAA team sprang into action, arriving at the scene with remarkable speed and precision. Recognising the severity of James’s injury, they expertly placed him on a backboard and secured him with a pelvic brace, ensuring his stability during transport. They then airlifted James to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in under 20 minutes—a critical journey that would have taken over an hour and 20 minutes by road.
Upon arrival, the medical staff conducted a thorough assessment and confirmed that James had sustained multiple fractures to his spine, along with an incomplete tear of his spinal cord. This diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging four-month journey in the hospital, where James underwent intensive treatment and rehabilitation. The swift actions of NWAA not only saved valuable time but also played a pivotal role in providing James with the immediate care he desperately needed.
Despite the severity of his injuries, James has shown remarkable resilience. Although he cannot walk independently, he can stand and take a few steps with the aid of crutches. Initially, he and his family were uncertain if he would ever regain the use of his legs, but James’ determination has been nothing short of inspiring.
Reflecting on the accident, James said: “I’m so grateful to the NWAA Charity. The crew kept me so calm and safe. The speed they got me to hospital meant that my injuries didn’t get any worse and I don’t know what would have happened without them.
“I was 15 at the time of my accident and didn’t know that NWAA was a charity, since we found out, we’ve been trying to raise as much money as possible to support them.”
In the wake of his accident, James and his family have turned their focus to fundraising for NWAA, recognising the vital role the charity plays in saving lives across the region. Together, they have hiked some of the UK’s most challenging peaks, including Scafell Pike, Snowdon, and Ben Nevis and raising £1,500 for the charity so far. James also participated in the Blackpool 10K in his wheelchair, showcasing his determination and spirit.
Senior Paramedic Team Leader Caroline, at NWAA Charity, said: “We undertook a detailed examination of James, and this helped us to identify what possible injuries he had and formulate a treatment plan. James was presenting with signs and symptoms of a spinal injury, we monitored him and his observations very closely and were ready to perform any interventions necessary to address any changes.
“We ensured that any movements were as minimal as possible, to prevent any further injury to his body. We also applied a pelvic splint, and James was immobilised to prevent any further movement and injuries. We then inserted a cannula so that we could give James some Morphine as pain relief and make him more comfortable. We also gave him Tranexamic acid because we couldn’t rule out any internal bleeding.”
Despite the challenges he faced, James remained focused on his education. With the accident happening just two weeks before his GCSEs, James still sat for his exams and achieved outstanding results.
James’ journey has also led him to the Southport Rehabilitation Unit, where he was introduced to disability sports. His passion for sports has flourished, and he has recently been selected to represent Great Britain in wheelchair fencing. He is set to compete in Pisa on November 5, 2024, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career.
As NWAA celebrates its 25th anniversary, James’ story illustrates the charity’s unwavering commitment to saving lives and providing critical care to those in need throughout the region. In the last 25 years, NWAA has attended over 45,000 missions.
