After seeing our helicopters delivering advanced pre-hospital care to people across the region for 21 years, the High Sheriffs of the North West got together to raise money and awareness for the North West Air Ambulance Charity.
The idea was that of High Sheriff of Lancashire, Catherine Penny. Catherine decided to take part in our Go21! Challenge, to celebrate our 21st birthday. Through a little bit of persuasion, she managed to convince the High Sheriffs of Merseyside and Cumbria to get their walking boots on and join her on her fundraising challenge.
Originally aiming to raise £6,000 for the North West Air Ambulance Charity (but going on to raise a massive £14,577), the group were joined by family, friends, past patients, and employees of the charity, as they took on immense walking challenges across the region.
Catherine walked 63kms of the Ribble Way, John Roberts, High Sheriff of Merseyside, walked the Wirral Way twice(!), and Julie Barton, High Sheriff of Cumbria, walked 21 miles in the footsteps of the air ambulance, following its path from Coniston to Furness General Hospital. Catherine commented: “The five High Sheriffs across the North West wanted to give back to this vital local charity, especially in its 21st year. The walks have been tough in this weather, but certainly worth it to raise funds and awareness for a service that has had such an impact on so many people across the North West.”
Following a cardiac arrest in 2017, the North West Air Ambulance Charity transported Andy to Wythenshawe hospital, where he had previously had a heart transplant, for specialist care. This played a huge part in saving his life.
One of Andy’s greatest passions in life was cycling and he also loved walking.
To remember Andy, his family took on an incredible 50k challenge, raising over £3300!
His son, Joseph and nephew, Lucas, both aged 12, cycled an impressive 50k! Andy’s niece, Ellie (14), and her friends Carla, Keira and Laura, also challenged themselves to walk a marathon in a day. His sister Karen, and brother-in-law Chris, cycled 50 miles and his parents cycled 10K – an incredible achievement for everyone, made all the more incredible as Karen and Andy’s mum has been receiving treatment for cancer.

In April 2020, Olly planted thousands of sunflower seeds on his farm to create the large-scale flower installation. The maze was fully bloomed by August, made up of roughly 500,000 flowers, reaching heights of 20ft, and taking visitors around 45 minutes to complete. The maze raised £40,379.62 through entrance fees and visitor donations, with all money split between NWAA, Willowbrook Hospice, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Liverpool Sunflowers.
Olly Harrison said: “I began fundraising five years ago, selling sunflowers in return for donations to my chosen charities. However, this year the weather conditions were just right to do something on a much bigger scale, so I began sowing the seeds for the maze. The feedback from the public was just fantastic, especially given the current situation. It was great to be able to give people a fun day out while raising money for charities that are close to my heart.”
Commenting on why NWAA is so close to his heart, Olly said: “The North West Air Ambulance is a charity that makes a real difference to the lives of so many across the North West and in Tarbock. We wanted the maze to help charitable partners of the NHS, who are supporting the service and looking after us during this time. It may not have been a great year for farming, but to have raised such a great amount for these special charities has definitely made up for it!”
Cumbria Fire and Rescue cadets, Liam and Keegan, have raised over £1000 for us by doing a sponsored walk in their firefighter uniforms!

Throughout May, MD Steve Phillips walked over 311 miles and more than one million steps! Whilst Steve’s personal fundraising efforts were in aid of the National Axial Spondylarthritis Society, North West Roofing Supplies matched Steve’s sponsorship total with a donation to the North West Air Ambulance Charity.
We rely on donations like this to continue our lifesaving work, and we are incredibly grateful to Steve and the rest of the North West Roofing Supplies family for their support.

Aughton Town Green Primary school recently took on mission 3.5. The students ran round the school grounds 3.5 times each day for 7 days and raised an incredible £1000!
